Xenobotany

This is a page ripped from the field notes of a working xenobotanist. It covers a plant in the "twilight" ecosystem in the band around a tidally locked planet. Harsh winds blow (along the ground) from the cold to the warm side. The planet is adapted to this, with a deep root system and woody branches that run low along the ground. The fronds sticking up are thin, and have photosynthetic stalks instead of leaves, since the light comes almost exactly at 90°. Despite being tidally locked, the planet is a bit wobbly, sometimes casting the region into more or less shadow or light. The bulb at the bottom houses nutrients to tide the plant over during these inhospitable seasons.

It should also be noted that the overwhelming majority of xenobotanists in the universe are not from Earth . . .
